A business can have strong sales, loyal customers and capable employees, yet still struggle to grow because too many decisions depend on the owner. As the business develops, the way you lead your people needs to change if you want a team that can take responsibility and achieve results together.

In this episode of the Business Wisdom Podcast, I explore how leadership, clear expectations, trust and accountability contribute to a team culture that supports business growth. We also look at developing future leaders and creating a business that can operate effectively without relying on you for every answer.

We'll cover:

  • Why owners become bottlenecks as their businesses grow
  • Moving from doing everything to coaching your team
  • Communicating shared goals and responsibilities
  • Building trust and learning from mistakes
  • Encouraging collaboration while maintaining accountability
  • Developing people and recognising team achievements

Building a culture that supports growth

One of the biggest challenges for a growing business is the owner's continued involvement in every decision. What worked when the business was smaller can eventually prevent the team from developing the confidence and capability to operate independently.

As a leader, your role is to establish direction, provide resources and help people perform effectively. Consider what would happen if you stepped away for a week. Would your team know what to do, or would important decisions wait until you returned?

I explore this further in If You Had to Stop Working in Your Business Tomorrow.

Make sure everyone understands what winning means

A team cannot work towards shared results unless everyone understands what the business is trying to achieve. If you asked five employees about your most important business goal, would their answers be similar?

Communicating your direction needs to be an ongoing activity, supported by regular meetings, individual conversations and performance reviews. People should understand their responsibilities, how their work contributes to the business and what results are expected.

Effective forward planning helps establish that direction, but communication is what allows the team to put it into practice.

Build trust without losing accountability

Trust develops when people feel comfortable contributing ideas, making decisions and learning from mistakes. When something goes wrong, examine what happened, what can be learned and whether a process needs improving rather than automatically taking the task away.

However, creating a supportive culture does not mean overlooking underperformance. People need to be accountable for their responsibilities, and leaders must be prepared to address problems when expectations are not being met.

Recruitment also matters. Hiring people who understand the role and share the standards of the business can prevent many performance issues. My article on assembling your dream team explores this further.

Develop people and recognise their contribution

Your business cannot continue to grow if your team's capabilities remain unchanged. Training, mentoring and identifying emerging leaders help people take on greater responsibility while reducing the business's dependence on you.

Collaboration also matters. Shared goals encourage people to support colleagues across different departments rather than concentrating solely on individual performance.

Take time to recognise achievements, whether that is securing a contract, improving a process or reaching a sales target. Acknowledge individual contributions while reinforcing the importance of the team working together.

Reflection

Building a team culture that wins together begins with examining your own leadership. Are you giving people the direction, authority and support they need, or are you unintentionally preventing them from taking responsibility?

Identify one area where your team depends too heavily on you and consider what needs to change. Developing a capable, accountable team creates greater opportunities for both your business and the people within it.
