Have you ever sat with your thumb hovering over the ‘post’ button, heart racing, only to close the app and decide that today just isn’t the day?
If you have, I want you to know something important: You are not alone.
The fear of showing up online, whether it’s on social media, video, or a podcast, is one of the most natural hurdles business owners face. We worry about being judged, looking unprofessional, or simply not having anything “perfect” enough to say.
But here’s the secret: nobody starts out as a polished expert. Visibility isn’t about being flawless; it’s about being present.
I’ve Been Exactly Where You Are
It might look like I have it all together now, but that hasn’t always been the case. If you head over to my YouTube channel and scroll back to some of my very first videos, you’ll see exactly what I mean.
Some of those early clips are, shall we say… a little dodgy! The lighting wasn’t great, I was nervous, and I certainly didn’t have the “Ideas Dynamo” energy I have today. But I shared them anyway.
I shared them because I knew the only way to reach the “good” content was to move through the “messy” content first. I had to give myself permission to be perfectly imperfect.
Why Consistency Trumps Perfection
When we wait for everything to be perfect before we show up, we’re actually putting a massive roadblock in front of our own momentum.
The more I showed up, even when I felt fearful, the more I realised three things:
- People connect with humans, not robots: Your audience wants to see the real you, quirks and all.
- The “Ugly Middle” is where you grow: You build your visibility muscle by using it. Every post, video, and email is a rep that makes you stronger.
- Relationships grow through presence: You can’t build trust with your audience if they can’t see or hear from you.
Small Steps to Build Your Visibility Confidence
If the thought of a live video feels like too much right now, that’s okay! Momentum is built through small, manageable actions. Here is how you can start overcoming that fear today:
- Start with a Content Cue: Don’t try to reinvent the wheel. Look at a question a client asked you this week. That’s your cue! Answer it in a simple text post or a quick photo.
- The 5-Minute Rule: Give yourself just five minutes to engage. Comment on a few posts in your industry or share a quick tip. Once the five minutes are up, you’re done.
- Normalise the Mess: Remind yourself that “perfect” is an illusion. Your goal is movement, not a masterpiece.
Your Knowledge Has Value
Every time you hold back out of fear, there is someone out there missing out on the help and guidance only you can provide. Your expertise deserves to be shared, and your audience is waiting for your “perfectly imperfect” presence.
So, take a deep breath, find that “dodgy” first step, and just hit post. I promise it gets easier the more you do it.
